So we’ve been hearing about Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman Vs. Superman since last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where director Zack Snyder announced the flick by having an actor read Batman’s internal dialogue from when he defeated Superman in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. And since then, we have been excited by reports that Snyder has met with Miller to discuss the movie, and, depending on your point of view, have been dismayed or excited about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman.
And other than some other casting news, there hasn’t been a ton of news about the movie (other than the fact that we’re apparently gonna see Wonder Woman and Cyborg at least in this flick). And that drought continued today, when Zack Snyder pissed away his bully pulpit on Twitter to talk about his new fucking digital camera.
Huh. Okay.
So in case the embedded Tweet doesn’t show up on your browser, here’s a picture of Affleck and the Batmobile that you can click to embiggen to an even larger size:
So the first thing I noticed when I saw this picture on my phone was that, yeah, I couldn’t see a Goddamned thing in this photo. Thankfully, the good folks at Comic Book Resources are better at Photoshop than I am (in the sense that they can afford Photoshop), so they ran the thing through some filters and whatnot so we can get a better view:
Okay, so beyond making it look like Holden is dealing with being dumped by Alyssa in a stranger and less socially-acceptable fashion than any of us imagined back in 1997, this picture shows us a couple of things. The first being that Snyder has clearly had the costume designers really study Miller on the Batsuit. There’s the short ears – shorter than any I think we’ve seen in a live-action Batman portrayal since Batman ’66. And then there’s the Bat logo, which, being black-on-black, is kinda hard to see here, but here’s an outline:
Yeah, that should look familiar to any comic fan…
It is far too early to tell how Batman Vs. Superman is gonna turn out. But if Snyder sticks with 80s Miller in the plotting and dialogue as much he has the visuals, we might be in good shape here.
That said, if Snyder decides to go Full Miller, we will quickly hear Affleck say, “I’m the Goddamned Batman, kid!” and we will all start quietly looking forward to Avengers 3 again.
