Jesus Christ, was that Doc Ock’s arms and The Vulture’s wings on the wall at Oscorp?
Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself.
Anyway, last week the first big promotional poster for next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released, and it showed not only Rhino and Electro as antagonists, but possibly the Green Goblin. Well, today the first full official trailer for the movie dropped, and it looks like we should be getting at least some ol’ Gobby – or more accurately, probably young Gobby – and at least a teaser for two more villains for the inevitable The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
And that “the inevitable” isn’t weary sarcasm over a perceived future money grab, it’s literally inevitable – movies three and four have already been greenlit and have release dates… but once again, I’m getting ahead of myself. How about that trailer, huh?
Well, you can check it out after the jump.
Okay, I don’t know if I’ve gone on record about this before, but I am damn happy to see a more traditional Spider-Man costume this time around. The one in the first movie wasn’t bad, but who you gonna trust? Some Hollywood hired-gun costumer whose last gig was probably some Merchant Ivory flick? Or Steve Ditko and 50 years of history?
Further, there is some solid looking action in this trailer. Sure, it looks a lot like a video game cutscene, but in my mind, that’s how Spider-Man should move – constantly, quickly, and thanks to his Spider-Sense, unpredictably and truly in three dimensions. Further, the camera work on those special effects seems smooth; there aren’t the kind of handheld-looking jerky motion and jump cuts you get from a lot of modern action films. So I really got a sense of how Spidey moves, barely one step ahead of danger, and it just looked fucking cool.
And finally, yeah, those had to be Ock’s and Vultures gear on the wall at Oscorp. Which leads to an interesting bit of arithmetic: Electro plus Rhino plus Goblin plus Vulture plus Ock adds up to five. Throw in one more villain sometime between now and the fourth movie, and you have a number that is positively… sinister.
What? What pun? And yes, I have been drinking, what’s your point?
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2, 2014.
